Tour with Shanta Premawardhana assisted by Eardley Mendis, February 2017.

Reflection on Observations or Learnings from our Tour

Learnings about myself:

Evaluative comments

At assistant Eardley Mendis’ home with guest monk and Leader Shanta Premawardhana (SCUPE director; now director of OMNIA, Chicago)

Street scene in Galle near religious sites; woman creating lace.

Seller of coconut awaiting welcome customers.

Shopkeeper with an array of types of items for sale.

Buddhist monk Mitta offered Dhamma (teaching) and led meditation class.

Worshippers gathered in one section of the noted Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy.

The symbol made obvious in the noted Buddhist Temple of the Tooth.

Our tour group hosted by staff and students at a Muslim school, a minority religion in Sri Lanka.

At Dambulla Cave Temple (from BCE) where 153 statues of Lord Buddha appear.

Dinner and overnight at Aliya Resort where this creation graced our room wall–human forms posed into the shape of an elephant.

The largest Buddhist stupa that our group visited or circled. Individuals circled in disciplined ways, read/chanted texts, or sang in groups.

Children become acquainted with Buddhist rituals too.
